I have just learned about a very creative group of community members who came up with a clever solution to creating their own targeted polls. This team wanted the option to pose questions to a small audience more...

homedepotmichael I have another question for the community; Recently I had a member get in touch with me and he no longer wanted to be a member so I deactivated his account. A few hours later I searched his profile and it showed that he was 'online now'. My question, If a member of the community is online while you deactivate their account are they automatically kicked off or do they end their session?

Thanks

Michael

Audrey Patchett: Hi Michael, they are not automatically kicked out, however once their session expires they will be unable to log back in. 8/5/2010 11:43 AM
homedepotmichael: Audrey,

Thanks for the timely response, I figured as much, but wanted to be sure. One more question for you that is unrelated. I notice that when someone posts a short message sometimes it does not show up on the 'Recent Activity' page. Is there a certain number of characters that triggers this to be fed to that page? Just wondering.

Thanks again,

Michael 8/5/2010 1:22 PM
Tom Paolucci: Hey Michael... You are correct. Posts need to be at least 75-characters long to be added to the newsfeed. Take care, Tom 8/9/2010 9:39 AM

homedepotmichael I am in the process of combining groups that are about the same subject in order to have a much cleaner look and make it easier for our members to find content. I am not sure if this is a current feature or not, but what I am tying to do as I remove one group I would like to move all members of that group to the remaining group...is that possible at this time?

Thanks
Michael

Tom Paolucci: Howdy Michael - At this time there is not an option that would allow one to move members into a group. I'm not sure how many folks would be impacted but if it isn't a HUGE number sending a private message letting them know about the new group along with a link might be an option. Regards, Tom 7/29/2010 3:11 PM
homedepotmichael: Thanks Tom, that was my current work around. Just thought there may be an easier way.
Thanks again

Deb McNew We would like to add rankings to our site. Has anyone else done this?

Deb McNew: I meant ranking users as they participate. 7/27/2010 10:32 AM
Tom Paolucci: Howdy Deb - I can see that your team has already implemented the Top Contributors option which will feature those members with the Most Thumbs Up or Most Content Added. While there is not currently an option to add other rankings to member profiles, this feature is on our engineering roadmap under case number 3249. I've added CivicPlus as one of the clients looking for such a feature. If there are additional details you would like me to share with our engineers, just let me know... Thanks, Tom 7/27/2010 11:53 AM

homedepotmichael Tom,
Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it. I will make contact with Audrey.

homedepotmichael Anyone else having some time out issues on the admin back end? The site has timed me out twice today and I have never had an issue before. FYI

Michael

Tom Paolucci: Howdy Michael,

I've not personally seen this issue yesterday or previously. While I am glad to see that others have not mentioned it I am sorry that it was an issue for you. Should you, or anyone else, ever have this happen again could you please contact either myself or your account manager immediately so that we can try to recreate the issue and track it back with our engineers?

Thanks,

Hi Michael, This is good feedback and we have heard similar requests from other communities. We have documented a case (#3260) for this request which will be included in the consideration of future features more...

homedepotmichael Another question to the community,

I am using the moderation tool as I am trying to move posts that are wrtten in the incorrect group. It seesm as though I am unable to do this, I can only move a post that has a file or picture attached. Is there a way for the moderator to move posts at this time? If not, do you have any suggestions?
Thanks

Michael
The Home Depot

Audrey Patchett: Hi Michael, An administrator can easily move discussion threads to a different group from the Admin / Groups Tab/ by clicking on the number of discussions link for a desired group. Next, click on the discussion you'd like to move and select the appropriate group from the drop down. I should have mentioned that we already have categories set up and still members have to sift through the groups. I appreciate you taking the time to post.

ashleykincaid wrote in Drop down menu to be added to the search function?

Have you tried creating categories and categorizing groups on the back end of your site? That has been really helpful for us. Now, rather than seeing a huge list of groups, users can sort by specific topics!

homedepotmichael Another question,
I am trying to keep a metric of business related posts vs. personal. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to track this? I would love to see some kind of feature that I could use to 'tag' groups as business on the backend for reporting purposes. Any other ideas are welcome.

homedepotmichael Another question for the Community;
For any community Managers or anyone else that would have a suggestion for me, our current site has over 300 groups and we are trying to find a way to search these groups making it easier for our associates to find. When you initially use the search box you don't have the option of 'where' to search. This option appears only after you submit a search.

homedepotmichael Question for the Community:

I have 10 associates that are current members of a PUBLIC group and I have suggested that they make the group PRIVATE due to the content. My question is, once the group owner changes the settings to private for that group will all current members remain members or would they have to go through the approval process with the group owner?

Thanks for your time- I look forward to hearing back

Audrey Patchett: Great question - As long as they are members of the group before it is private, then they will remain as members after it's settings are switched to private. They will not have to go through the approval process. 7/9/2010 6:11 PM

Tom Paolucci blogged about The option formerly known as Dashboards...

Those of you who have visited the administration panel recently may have noticed that the Dashboards option has a new name: Analytics . If you've checked further you will have seen that not only is there a new more...

homedepotmichael: Tom,

I just wanted to add my two cents into this discussion. Being the Community manager for The Home Depot Associate site I love the Analytics enhancement that you guys have added to the dashboard. What would be even more helpful is to give us the option to go more in depth once a tab is selected. For instance, when I click on the 'member activity' tab it pulls in data for members, logins and average logins per user. (Which seems to be stuck on 24.4 regardless of the time period selected) What I would like to see is if I click on either one of those stats, say members it would give me a list of new members for that given time and so forth.

This also goes for all the other tabs as well, just to get a more in depth analysis of each. There is a real possibility to do this for the engagement history tab, I would love to be able to click on posts and see the actual posts for that given time period that I specified on the left.

Now, I don't know if this issue is specific to our site, but the recent activity page, I would love to see that be expanded where members can 'page' through past posts giving them an option to go page by page instead of populating only the last 20 hours or so. This would be helpful as I have received feedback form our members that discussions ‘get lost' and hard to find unless it does not show up on the recent activity page.

Like I said, my two cents, thanks for your time.

Tom Paolucci: Hello Michael,

Thanks so much for your comments; I am thrilled to hear that you like our new Analytics feature. We are still considering this function in beta so any feedback is much appreciated.

Now that you mentioned it I can see how the Member Activity statistics can appear to be stuck and I will review this with our designers. The current totals are displayed first in bold blue text and when the different date ranges are selected using the tabs only the delta for the date range (displayed to the right in smaller green or red text and in the chart above) will change. If you were to define a custom range with a different end date all of the information should change. I can certainly see how access to a list of the new members for a specific time period would be useful and I will add this as a feature request. If this information is needed today it can be captured from reports run from the members tab but it would require a little manipulation of the data those reports provide.

Like the member information, additional details regarding discussion posts can be captured from the activity reports under the Groups tab, but I can see how having this information easily accessible from one location would be very helpful. This will also be submitted as a feature request.

The Newsfeed is currently limited to the most recent 50-items applicable to each member and for very active community sites this number can seem too limiting. Our engineering team is currently exploring options to let members view more information on the Newsfeed, as well as options to filter the information being displayed. I expect we will have more information on these options with one of our next upgrade releases.

Again, I really do appreciate the feedback and I hope you will continue to share your two cents with us often...

Cheers,
Tom 7/1/2010 1:02 PM
